The University of Costa Rica offers international students the chance to be part of its student body as undergraduate or graduate students through the formal process of admission.

Students already enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs may can study at UCR for one or two semesters through exchange agreements that facilitate student mobility.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CATEGORIES:

The University of Costa Rica has established two student categories: regular students and visiting students.

  1. Regular students are Costa Rican or International Students who have been formally admitted as degree-seeking students at the University of Costa Rica. Regular students are required to take an admission exam. For more information visit the Admissions website.
  2. Visiting students are Costa Rican or international students under a non-degree seeking status at the University of Costa Rica, who wish to take courses with the purpose of transferring the credits to their home institution afterwards, achieving this through a student exchange program. Students under this condition do not need to take the admission exam and are not linked exclusively to any School or study program. The condition of visiting student can be extended for up to two semesters.

VISITING STUDENTS

Students must complete the Admission Application Form and hand in all other requested documents, which include the original transcript issued and sent by the home institution’s Office of the Registrar (students with transcripts issued in a language other than Spanish or English must submit an official or certified translation of this document).

Transcripts must be sent directly from the Office of the Registrar of the home institution to the Office of International Affairs and External Cooperation of the University of Costa Rica. Transcripts sent by the students will not be accepted.

The student’s grade point average should be a minimum of eight (8) or above in a scale of one (1) to ten (10), or its equivalent to a 3.2 GPA (USA).

Exchange students who visit UCR through an exchange agreements are exempt from paying tuition.

All documents must be handed in no later than October 15th, for students enrolling for the first academic semester, and March 12th for students enrolling for the second academic semester.
